About Us

Food Quarter Magazine

The North East today enjoys one of the most diverse and exciting food and drink scenes anywhere in the UK. From field to fork, nowhere can boast higher quality produce coming from the land, from artisan food producers or out of the kitchens of our restaurants.

Our coastline provides us with sensational seafood, the hills of Cumbria and Northumberland with lamb that is famous the world over. Pork and beef farmers are rediscovering rare breeds that provide meat that looks and tastes the way our grandparents remember it. Vegetable growers too are finding markets for their organic boxes and seeing families flock to pick their own soft fruit.

This in turn provides the regions chef's with an inspirational palette to work with, forging relationships with local producers who bring the very best the seasons have to offer right to their doors.

We, the public, have never been more interested in where our food comes from and under what conditions it is produced. We frequent farmers markets and farm shops and put our supermarkets under pressure to stock food from local producers and food that puts animal welfare and taste before price and appearance. Thanks to the huge interest in growing our own fruit and vegetables our garden centres now feature kitchen garden areas and there are waiting lists for every allotment space in the region.

And so we bring you FQ, Food Quarter. Here some of the region's leading food and drink writers will bring you a snapshot of what the season has to offer in terms of great produce, and recipes that will help you make the best of it. We'll give you the inside track on what is happening at the very best eateries in the region, whether it be the best bacon sandwich we have ever experienced or a symphonic five-courser from a Michelin starred chef. We'll reveal the region's hidden gems and celebrate its stars. Our view will be determinedly local but we'll also bring you news we consider worthy of your attention from further afield.

We'd like you to get involved too. If you've found a Food Hero that lights up your life or a cook hiding their light under a bushel, let's hear about it! Send us your recipes, lets hear who you think is cooking up a storm. Join our Dining Club and get unbelievable offers in some of the best restaurants in the region. Win the latest kitchen gadget or cookbook in our competitions. You can even come and help us on our allotment if that's what floats your boat, because it certainly does ours.
